Jack is
a self-taught artist. He began carving in wood in his early
teens and continued to do so throughout his twenties.
An avid outdoorsman, Jack spends many hours in the woods observing
wildlife. While finding and collecting antlers that had been
shed by moose, deer and elk, he discovered that the symmetrical
curves and texture of the antlers provided an exceptional
medium for the creation of art works. This made the change
from woodcarving to antler
carving a natural progression. Carving in sheep horns came
later, as Jack came into
possession of bighorn sheep horns that had either died of natural
causes or had been
confiscated by game wardens for one reason or another and sold at
auction.
To create one of his original works of art, Jack first selects a
horn or an antler and
then using its natural shape and his woods experience, visualizes
a wildlife art form. The
art work is then carefully created using a number of hand-held
tools, and each piece
gradually comes alive, reflecting Jack's love of the natural
world. Each carving is created
from a single horn or antler. No finish is applied to the
carving, leaving the piece to
show its natural beauty.
Jack lives in Southern British Columbia and had had his works
purchased by art
and wildlife lovers across Canada as well as in many other parts
of the world.
