Alan has spent many years working in a variety of different
professions, from a chicken farmer in the North East of England, to a
driller in a mine in Faro in the Yukon Territory, and currently a
millwright in Alberta...
Always wanting to try something new, his reputation for adaptability
in producing custom made gifts spread. Demand for his talent at
creating the "unusual" increased, and the mediums varied,
but then wrought iron became the latest hobby. Many homes are now
graced with unique wrought iron gates, oriental style gongs, and other
metal pieces.
His passion for working with metal and his lifelong love of nature
eventually melded into the wonderful pieces of art that he creates
today.
From wrought iron to nature pictures?
Initially single animal pieces were made to enhance wrought iron
following a commissioned gate for a hot tub area. The artist so
enjoyed creating the animals that he incorporated them into scenic
pictures, and while he still does accept other custom work, he
continues to focus on the nature metal art as his main objective.
The pieces are primarily carbon steel and stainless steel, with some
having copper, brass or wood for accent. The fur/hair on the animals
and the detail on the trees are "carved" into the metal and
is the most painstaking part of the process (the close up picture of
the polar bear illustrates the detail more clearly). Coloring the work
is achieved using a combination of heat, rust and some chemical
reaction, there is no paint utilized.
All the items have hangers welded at the back of the work at 16"
centers so that the art may be securely hung on studded walls and a
clear lacquer finish is then applied to protect the surface of the
pieces.
