This
is an original and contemporary piece of Iroquois pottery. The
circles (dotted rim) symbolize sacred and continuous life cycles
of renewal. All of life in the universe evolves and rejuvenates
through cycles. The guardian eagle symbolizes strength, vision and
courage. The turtle (clan) symbolizes the continent of North
America or “Turtle Island”, the balance of the fertile land
and life-sustaining water. The humming birds symbolize the beauty
and fascination of life as they always capture our attention. They
pollinate the woodland flowers which are the “medicines” and
symbolize life, health, growth and fertility. The blending of the
geometric or linear with the spherical designs symbolizes the
harmonious and prolific order of the laws and forces of nature.
This piece consists of two pottery techniques, sgraffito and
carving.
